My first question is always, “what are you currently using?” My purpose in asking, is that often times the products we are using are exacerbating the issue. If you’re using a body wash of any kind on you or your kids, it likely has sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS is also used in laundry detergents and most anything companies want to create lather with. Unfortunately, SLS can cause skin irritation. (Why it’s allowed in skincare products blows my mind). Our bar soap and all our products are free of sulfates. We rely on skin-loving castor oil and aloe to create lather. Often times just swapping soaps to a homemade bar soap is going to improve your and your kids’ skin. (Traditional bar soaps from the store are triple milled which means they are basically sucked bone dry of all the nourishing properties that homemade soap contains.) Bar soap will sting if it gets in a baby’s eyes, so you just need to be a little extra careful. This leads me into a brief discussion about laundry detergent. Even free and clean detergents tend to contain SLS, so again, if any is left behind on clothing/bedding, it’s going to be irritating to your/their skin. The detergent we choose to use is so important because we wear those clothes/bedding on our skin all day and night. 1924 Laundry Detergent is the kind you can make yourself at home if you wanted to — we just do the hard work for you. We grind 1924 Soap and add to it salt, baking soda, and washing soda. We don’t use borax in our recipe. We have Unscented Laundry Detergent, one that is essential oil (Lavender Eucalyptus) and 2 fragrances (Crisp Linen and Fresh & Clean). Our fragrances are all Phthalate-free. If you want me to go down the phthalate rabbit hole with you, I will — just ask — but I’m throwing a lot at you right now just answering this question. You’ll also want to ditch dryer sheets. They leave a film on your clothing, drum of your machine, and ultimately your skin. We encourage wool dryer balls (which we do sell). We also have sprays you can spray on them for added scent if you want. We have quite a few choices right now. Some essential oil and some fragrance. Once you wash your/their skin with a bar of 1924 soap, after I would suggest using either Body Oil or Butter or a combo on their skin instead of traditional lotion. Our Oils and Butters are just basic ingredients, no preservatives, no artificial ingredients. We have unscented (naked) and scented, but only with essential oils. 1924 Body Oil is great by itself in the warmer months. As it gets colder and drier, I suggest using Body Oil and then adding a thin layer of 1924 Body Butter to seal the moisture in. Many people with eczema prefer our Naked products, but the BEST product is Coffee Oil and Coffee Butter. Coffee Essential oil is especially healing to damaged skin. The caveat is that you/they will smell like coffee. Some people like that and some don’t. Many people can use our scented butters and oils, but often start with naked to make sure their skin is ok with it. We also have Lotion Sticks. These also come in Naked and Coffee as well as some other essential oils. These are excellent for hands or pesky patches of eczema that need some extra protection. It’s very much a barrier layer.
